Today,  I’ve got a car that’s so hyped I cannot believe I actually have my hands on it! I’m walking you through the 2024 Lexus GX—a luxury SUV that’s rugged, stylish, and packed with features. I’ve been driving it for a few days now, and let me just say: I’m impressed. From its powerful performance to its family-friendly touches, this car has a lot to offer. But as always, the big question is: is it family-friendly?

2024 Lexus GX Highlights

  • Available as a two- or three-row SUV.

  • Second-row ceiling vents and heated/ventilated seats for added comfort.

2024 Lexus GX Exterior

The first thing you’ll notice about the Lexus GX is its bold, boxy design—it’s sporty, luxurious, and definitely stands out on the road. It’s giving G-Wagon energy but at a much more approachable price point. Honestly, it’s becoming one of my dream cars just based on looks alone.

The GX is built on the same frame as the Toyota Land Cruiser but offers the option for three rows of seating. If you opt for the Overtrail or Overtrail Plus trims, you’ll only get two rows to make room for more cargo space. It’s nice to have that flexibility depending on what your family needs.

Price

Now let’s talk price: The 2024 Lexus GX starts at $64,200—not much more than the Land Cruiser—and climbs depending on trims and features. For what you’re getting in terms of luxury and performance, I think it’s priced fairly compared to other SUVs in this class.

2024 Lexus GX First Row

Sitting in the driver’s seat of the GX feels light and airy thanks to plenty of head clearance (even with the sunroof). The seats are super comfortable and supportive for long drives, but I did notice that the interior feels a bit narrow—you’re sitting pretty close to your passenger. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but don’t expect tons of elbow room up front.

One thing I found interesting was that this trim didn’t have the “cool box” feature that came in the Land Cruiser I drove last week. Honestly? I’m fine with that because I’d rather have extra storage space than a tiny fridge in my center console.

Infotainment System

The infotainment system is sleek and modern with lots of digital features. Unlike the Land Cruiser (which has more knobs and buttons), the GX leans into a more high-tech vibe while still keeping some physical controls for essentials like climate settings and volume—which I love because touchscreen-only setups drive me crazy.

There are also two USB-C ports, a wireless charger, and plenty of cupholders for all your drinks (or energy drinks if you’re like me).

2024 Lexus GX Second Row

The second row of the GX is comfortable but not super spacious—it’s not going to be your go-to car if you need three car seats across. That said, it does fit rear-facing car seats better than the Land Cruiser thanks to slightly more legroom when the front seat is adjusted for taller drivers like me (I’m six feet tall).

I tested two different car seats: the Britax Poplar (a compact convertible seat) and the Nuna Urbn (a baseless infant seat). Both fit well without taking up too much space or compromising legroom up front. However, if you’re using larger car seats—like rotating models or those with deep reclines—you might feel a bit cramped.

As far as amenities go, Lexus delivers here with heated and ventilated second-row seats, ceiling vents for better airflow (a must-have for rear-facing kiddos), and two USB-C ports for charging devices. The one downside? No built-in sunshades—a feature I always look for in family cars because they make such a difference on sunny days.

The LATCH system includes lower anchors on both outboard seats and three top tether anchors across the bench seat—perfect if you need flexibility for different car seat setups.

2024 Lexus GX Third Row

If you choose to go with the three-row version of the GX, here’s what you can expect: decent legroom for adults or older kids in the third row but very little trunk space when all seats are up. Accessing the third row is easy thanks to fold-and-flip second-row seats that get completely out of your way—no awkward squeezing through tight spaces. That being said, I always prefer to see car seat-friendly tilt to make access easier if you have car seats installed in the second row.

Once you’re back there, it’s surprisingly comfortable with plenty of head clearance and separated seating for two passengers (no middle seat squishing). There are also ceiling vents, cupholders, and charging ports back there—nice touches that make it feel less like an afterthought compared to some other SUVs.

That said, there are no LATCH anchors in the third row, so it’s best suited for older kids in booster seats or adults.

Trunk Space

Trunk space in the GX depends on whether you go with two or three rows of seating. With all three rows up, there’s barely enough room for groceries or small bags—it’s definitely not ideal if you need to haul strollers or sports gear regularly. But when you fold down that third row? You get a flat cargo area with plenty of room for whatever life throws at you.

One thing I wasn’t thrilled about was having to hold down the button to open or close the trunk—it feels unnecessary in a luxury car where most competitors offer hands-free options.

2024 Lexus GX Wrap-Up

The 2024 Lexus GX is an impressive SUV that combines luxury with rugged capability—it looks great, drives even better, and offers enough family-friendly features to make it worth considering if you don’t need tons of passenger space.

If you’re looking for something stylish with off-roading capabilities that can handle two kids comfortably (or occasionally use a third row), this is a great luxury option. But if trunk space or three-across seating is a priority for your family, there are better options like the Toyota Highlander or even minivans.
