The Ultimate Guide To The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas
When you hear about the Volkswagen Atlas, it's usually from someone in The Car Mom crew—and for good reason!
I've been a big fan of the Atlas for years, and it's been a joy to introduce this gem to so many families who might not have considered it otherwise as their next family car. A Volkswagen? It's been unexpected, but you know I love a bold choice!
Since its debut in 2018, the Atlas has been a staple in The Car Mom community! It combines next-level car seat functionality with an upgraded interior, making it a top choice for families. And let’s talk about the 2024 redesign—this car has received some major upgrades that make it even harder to overlook.
Is the Atlas perfect? No car is, but it has a lot to offer. So buckle up and get ready; you’re about to dive into the Ultimate Guide to the Volkswagen Atlas, the vehicle that not only meets but exceeds family expectations and has proudly earned the first-ever Car Mom Family Car of the Year Award!
We're going to review all things VW Atlas -- including the car seats you'll need for an ideal setup.
The Volkswagen Atlas is one of the largest mid-size SUVs (and one of my favorites!).
To put the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas into a specific category, I classify it as a larger mid-size SUV. This means it sits between compact and full-size SUVs in terms of size and features. This is by far the most popular car option out there and what I get the most questions about as The Car Mom.
The mid-size SUV market is HUGE, but the Volkswagen Atlas falls on the larger end of the spectrum meaning it is one of the biggest options you can get until you jump into the full-size category.
For a lot of families I talk to, there is a huge dilemma between choosing a large mid-size and full-size family car. I always recommend giving cars (like the Atlas) a COMPLETE test drive to see if they can fit your needs. I’m talking about bringing the gear, the car seats, anything you carry everyday to see if this car can match your family’s lifestyle.
You’d be surprised at the amount of families that realize large mid-size cars like the Atlas fit their needs just as well (if not better) than a full-size option.
If you’re curious to see a comparison between large midsize SUVs and full-size SUVs, check out my post: Mid-Size vs. Full-Size SUVs: How To Choose What's Right For YOUR Family.
The Atlas is ideal for families with 2-3 (and maybe 4) kids.
The Atlas stands out in the mid-size category with its exceptionally spacious second row—perfect for families. While any car might work for those with two kids, the Atlas is particularly brilliant if you have three children needing car seats. Unlike many vehicles in its class, it comfortably accommodates three car seats side by side in the second row.
Moreover, it features my number one must-have: The Car Seat Tilt. This innovative design allows access to the third row without removing a car seat—a game changer for families with young kids! . It's a big deal and although more cars are starting to include this feature, the Atlas nails it. Plus, you don’t have to give up any trunk space.
And if you have four kids or just prefer one of your kids in the third row, there are two seats back there with lower and tether anchors ready to go. It’s just perfect—chef’s kiss!
It has an excellent price and value.
Starting at $37,000 this family hauler is budget-conscious without skimping on safety, technology or comfort. Volkswagen reworked the 6 trim levels, SE to SEL Premium R-Line so there is really something for every family at every budget. Being able to transport a family of 7 in a new vehicle under $40,000 is remarkable. If you are looking for additional premium features, the SEL offers a few luxury touches for an additional $10,000 added to the base price.
Speaking of budget, averaging at just about 20mpg you can stretch your dollar at the gas pumps. City driving gets about 18mpg and highway is stated 24mpg. That said, I've been able to get quite a bit above 24mpg on long highway trips utilizing ACC (adaptive cruise control.)
2024 Atlas Earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+
The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas prioritizes your family’s safety, earning the prestigious IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for 2023. This recognition requires meeting strict standards, including good ratings in both driver- and passenger-side small overlap front crash tests, the original moderate overlap front test, and the updated side crash test. It also demands advanced or superior vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention and headlights rated as acceptable or good as standard equipment.
Earlier Atlas models missed the mark due to limitations in headlight performance and pedestrian collision prevention, but the 2024 model exceeds these criteria, making it one of the safest SUVs on the market. We LOVE to see it!
A standout safety feature of the Atlas is its Front Assist system. Using advanced radar sensors, it provides forward collision warnings to alert the driver of potential hazards, prepares the car for emergency braking, assists with braking, and even applies automatic emergency braking when needed. This system ensures extra peace of mind, helping to prevent accidents and keep your family protected.
My Atlas Trim Level Recommendations:
When deciding between the SE and SEL trims of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas, it comes down to what features matter most to you and your budget.
The SE, as the base model, includes all the essentials and provides great functionality for families. It’s a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a spacious, reliable larger midsize SUV without breaking the bank.
The SEL, however, takes things to the next level with premium features, but it comes at a $10,000 higher price point. The key upgrades exclusive to the SEL include:
Heads-Up Display: Displays critical information on the windshield for a safer, more convenient driving experience.
Ambient Lighting: Creates a more upscale and customizable cabin atmosphere.
Panoramic Sunroof: Brightens the interior with natural light, making the cabin feel more spacious.
Power Tailgate: Adds convenience, especially helpful during busy family outings.
Both trims offer the same functionality and core features, so the decision ultimately depends on whether the added luxury and convenience of the SEL are worth the extra investment. If budget allows, I recommend the SEL for families who value premium features and a touch of luxury. However, the SE remains an excellent option that doesn’t compromise on practicality or comfort.
The Atlas has some amazing family-friendly features.
Before we get into all of the details of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas, I want to talk about some of the best family features in this car that make it so functional:
A much-needed update to the interior and tech features
Built-in sunshades — so many more expensive cars do not include these!
Excellent LATCH systems in the second and third rows
Car seat-friendly tilt
TONS of trunk space
A Row By Row Review:
To truly understand everything the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas has to offer (and it’s a lot) I want to walk you through each row of the car to help you picture how it could potentially work for your family on a daily basis.
First Row
One of my biggest complaints about the original Atlas was how bare-bones the interior felt. Volkswagen heard the complaints from earlier models and made impressive improvements for 2024.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, the upgraded leather, stitching, and overall design immediately stand out—especially in the SEL trim.
Heated and ventilated seats now come standard across the lineup, a welcome driver’s comfort feature that I appreciate not being locked behind a paywall. Volkswagen continues with thoughtful details like cupholders big enough to fit a Stanley tumbler and a middle console with excellent storage, USB-C ports, and an underneath bridge for added functionality.
The SEL trim adds Heads-Up Display, which has been a long-awaited addition, and ambient lighting that pairs nicely with an intuitive infotainment system. While the screen is sleek and user-friendly, I’m not thrilled that the volume control is embedded in the touchscreen rather than being a physical knob. Small controls like that are better when they’re separate from the infotainment system, but not every car can be absolutely perfect so I am looking past it for all the other great additions.
Second Row
The Atlas is one of my favorite large mid-size SUVs for families, especially large families looking to pack a lot of kids safely into a car that is not classified as full-size. Before I get into a thorough look at everything, I want to say first my one gripe is the lack of ceiling vents. Not a total deal breaker, but for children in car seats this ventilation is not ideal.
Second-row amenities include:
AC controls in-back of the first-row center console
Heated seats
Two USB-C ports
Built-in sun shades
Starting with the captain’s chairs, there is almost 5 inches of rear-facing car seat clearance. This is so generous for the size of this car. For a passenger in the second row, the width of the car and length make it so comfortable. The leg room is excellent, along with having a nice aisle way that a full-size adult could fit through.
Now looking at the bench seat, you are still able to get this option in the higher trim levels, which so few manufacturers do. I want to say the bench for the Volkswagen Atlas is the Best In Class because of the three lower and three tether anchors. This car is a three across machine and I have done so many car seat combinations in it.
My ONLY complaint about the bench is its middle seat. It’s not narrow enough that an adult can’t comfortably fit there, you absolutely can, but narrow enough that your car seat selection is limited. The relatively narrow seat coupled with the rigid buckle stalk means a car seat must be thin enough so that it doesn’t rest on the buckle.
Third Row
No matter what trim level you get, you’ll only get two car seats in the third row. While one less seat may sound like a loss, I look at it as a total win because you get two large seats that are comfortable for passengers and more carseat friendly.
Both third-row seats in the Atlas are so comfortable, wide, and deep which are awesome for passengers and car seat installations. No lower anchors back here, but we do have tether anchors.
Although because it’s so deep, it does lose a bit of legroom. With the second-row seat pushed all the way forward, I do have more clearance. Third-row amenities include better ventilation back here, two USB-C ports, and cup holders.

Second Row LATCH Setup: Three lower anchors + three tether anchors
Third Row LATCH Setup: two tether anchors
Trunk Space
Trunk space is a standout feature of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. With 21 cubic feet behind the third row, it’s enough for a double stroller and a small grocery haul. However, the real magic happens when the third row is folded down, revealing a generous 56 cubic feet—perfect for double strollers, stroller wagons, and even a Costco run.
Thanks to the flat-folding design and a spacious bench seat that accommodates three passengers, you can haul everything you need without compromising comfort. Need even more room? Fold down the second row to unlock nearly 97 cubic feet of cargo space, with 90 inches from the front row to the tailgate. Whether it’s drywall, plywood, or just a big weekend project, the Atlas can handle it all.
My Atlas Car Seat Recommendations
The excellent second and third rows (whether you choose the captain’s chairs or bench seat) allow you to choose many car seat options. While this flexibility is amazing, it also makes the sheer amount of options you can choose from overwhelming. Here is how I recommend optimizing each seat to make this Atlas a true family hauler:
For The Second Row Bench:
The Atlas bench is a 60/40 split, with the passenger-side seat (2P) being the widest at about 23.5 inches. The center seat (2C) is notably narrower and has a 12.6-inch buckle base restriction, requiring careful seat selection. Here’s how I recommend optimizing each spot:
2C (Center):
The Graco SlimFit3 LX 3-in-1 is the gold standard for this position with its slim 11.5-inch base and built-in lock-off, ensuring a secure fit without damaging the buckle.
2P (Passenger-Side):
With plenty of space, almost any seat works here! Great picks include:
Infant Seats: Nuna Pipa RX, Chicco KeyFit30, Joie Mint LATCH, Evenflo Shyft DualRide
Convertible Seats: Britax Poplar, Nuna Rava, Evenflo Revolve360 Slim
Boosters: Graco Turbobooster, Chicco KidFit
2D (Driver-Side):
Similar to 2P, this seat offers flexibility. The Britax Poplar works well rear- or forward-facing, and most boosters fit snugly here too.
Three-Across with Third-Row Access:
If you frequently need access to the third row, the Evenflo Revolve360 Slim is a standout choice in 2P. It rotates and tilts forward, maintaining accessibility. Another option is the Nuna Pipa Urbn, installed baselessly to save space.
For The Second Row Captain’s Chairs
For families who want a second row with captain’s chairs, the installation process is easier, and the seats allow better access to the third row. Here’s what works best:
Without Third-Row Passengers:
Infant Seats: Nuna Pipa RX, Chicco KeyFit35, Clek Liing
Convertible Seats: Nuna Rava, Britax One4Life Slim, Cybex Callisto G360
Boosters: Graco Turbobooster, Nuna Aace
With Third-Row Passengers:
If third-row seating is in use, compact car seats like these are essential:
Infant Seats: Nuna Pipa Urbn, Chicco KeyFit30, Joie Mint LATCH
Convertible Seats: Graco Extend2Fit, Evenflo Revolve360 Slim, Britax Poplar
For The Third Row
The third row in the Atlas lacks lower anchors, so all seats must be installed with a seat belt. This makes car seats with built-in lock-offs essential for easier installation.
Convertible Car Seats: Britax Poplar, Nuna Rava, Graco Extend2Fit (no lock-off)
Harness-to-Booster Seats: Britax Grow With You ClickTight, Chicco MyFit
Boosters: Graco Turbobooster, Harmony Dreamtime Elite, Chicco GoFit
The Volkswagen Atlas Is The Ultimate Family Car
The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is a staple option for families needing a 6-7 passenger SUV that offers plenty of space and comfort without sacrificing functionality. It’s ideal for families with two or three kids, even if all are in car seats.
It has been (and will continue to be) a staple in The Car Mom recommendations and what I compare a lot of newer cars. It’s hard to beat the price, safety, and overall flexibility it brings to families.
